Union & Sepia Jewels Exhibit - Michael Douglas Jones - Terah Ware

 The UNION Exhibition

will open in

Boonsboro, Maryland

February 4th - 29th

*
Opening Reception
February 4th, 1-3pm

*
I am pleased to announce this upcoming exhibition.  A collection of mixed media art/journals that commemorate the sesquicentennial of the American Civil War.
*
Michael Douglas Jones displays layers of history with splendid antiquity.  Visual stories that are told from assemblage artifacts.

When I first heard that Michael would be exhibiting his work at the "Gifts Inn Boonsboro" Gallery.  I immediately thought how wonderful it would be to have a dual show.  His work captivated me many years ago when I was visiting the Delaplaine Visual Arts Center in Frederick, MD.  I remember completely relating to his way of communication...through his work of art.
*
He was, by far, the artist who had a voice who spoke clearly and precisely...

It is with great pleasure that my new collection, "Sepia Jewels" of antique letters, wax seals, Edwardian lorgnette, and calligraphy nibs will be among these stories of old.

"The Union exhibition includes a series of collage pieces that follow a personal journey through the fictional journals and love letters of a cavalry courier between 1861 and 1865. A slideshow of the art pieces are available here, and the book is available here."

The Figurehead - Breast Cancer Awareness - Mixed Media

"The Figurehead"
Terah Ware

Among the series of paintings in "Forever Strong Womanhood", their is "The Figurehead".  A painting that is more than what we view for pleasure, but an illustration that transcends a message of courage.

I remember sitting on my knees on the floor of my studio, practically on top of my painting that had slowly come to life over a period of three years.  The background had been completed and I knew that it was time for the next layer of information...

A woman who conveyed strength and yet displayed sorrow.

Images came rolling in my mind and the thought of my Great Grandmother appeared.  I knew that this piece would be different from the rest, a personal gesture that would linger for all women.

I imagined myself as my Great Grandmother, Lula Irene Koontz, during the end of her life.  She was succumbing to breast cancer in her home and was surrounded by family and friends.  I felt her courage during the illness and the sweet acceptance of passing.

How could I illustrate this?  How could I put these emotions for you to see?  How could I capture that strength?

My hands became swift and I began to render with pastel the beautiful face.  The downward look, the glance towards the compass.  A symbolic gesture that she is looking for direction.  Bare breasted and vulnerable, she has been exposed...maybe revealed.  The painting is not complete without the opened pocket watch.  My mind reeled with imagery and symbolism.  I wanted the viewer to feel the pain.  I wanted to create an image that showed the breast removed.  I wanted people to see that breast cancer is not just a disease.

One of the most profound interpretations that was presented to me gave me goose bumps.

As she had tears in her eyes, she said, "Time is running out."  ~ Dr. Cee Ann Davis

As an artist, I believe that I succeed with a work of art if...only if...it makes you feel something.  If you remember something or that it touches your heart.

Reveal - Poetry - Terah Ware

Reveal

I look up, barely able to see the light in your eyes from a

smoldering fire that has been left to the night.

I can see the outline of your face.

Dark and occasionally dips into the cold air in my direction.

Your revealing your desires...your dreams to me.

This was written while I was at Pennsic...a Medieval Reenactment that takes place in Northern Pennsylvania.  ~ Terah

Hand Weathered Backgrounds - Jewelry Display & Mixed Media

My Hand Weathered Backgrounds

I have given new life to my mixed media painting backgrounds from my studio!  I have found that they work wonderfully for my jewelry photo displays!  They were originally from a small series that I started awhile back and have been left on the easel.  The hand weathered backgrounds are on illustration board and are perfect for my mixed media collages and now vintage jewelry!

Perfect for Jewelry Photo Backgrounds!

I have found that the hand painted backgrounds give depth and vintage character to my designs!  The washes of acrylic add textures that compliment the rich detail of every jewel.
With the right lighting and your imagination...a beautiful work of art is born!

Now my mixed media painting backgrounds can be used for both passions!
