Sepia Jewels - Inspiration From a Historical Past Time

Se.pi.a :

A reddish-brown color associated particularly with monochrome photographs of the 19th and early 20th centuries.

Beautiful and delicate comes to mind when looking at antiquated letters.  The deliberate strokes from the dip pen make the words even more enchanting.
*
The idea of Sepia Jewels first surfaced when a Victorian poem journal was given to me.  Each page was adorned with amazing handwritten script that sparked my appreciation of writing.  I immediately thought of small jewels that would be accented by this historical past time.
*

The Sarah McCleery Necklace

This particular piece was experimental.  I wanted to layer different vintage materials of an antique crocheted flower accented with a mother of pearl button on a Victorian handwritten script.
*
I felt that the design was strong and will pave the way for more similar designs.

Among the Victorian handwritten letters, I also wanted to include pieces that would accent the theme of writing.
*
Vintage European Stamps were upcycled to whimsical adornments accented by Czech glass beads that have been fire polished in opalescent hues.

Union & Sepia Jewels Exhibit - Michael Douglas Jones - Terah Ware

 The UNION Exhibition

will open in

Boonsboro, Maryland

February 4th - 29th

*
Opening Reception
February 4th, 1-3pm

*
I am pleased to announce this upcoming exhibition.  A collection of mixed media art/journals that commemorate the sesquicentennial of the American Civil War.
*
Michael Douglas Jones displays layers of history with splendid antiquity.  Visual stories that are told from assemblage artifacts.

When I first heard that Michael would be exhibiting his work at the "Gifts Inn Boonsboro" Gallery.  I immediately thought how wonderful it would be to have a dual show.  His work captivated me many years ago when I was visiting the Delaplaine Visual Arts Center in Frederick, MD.  I remember completely relating to his way of communication...through his work of art.
*
He was, by far, the artist who had a voice who spoke clearly and precisely...
*
~ VISUALLY ~

It is with great pleasure that my new collection, "Sepia Jewels" of antique letters, wax seals, Edwardian lorgnette, and calligraphy nibs will be among these stories of old.

"The Union exhibition includes a series of collage pieces that follow a personal journey through the fictional journals and love letters of a cavalry courier between 1861 and 1865. A slideshow of the art pieces are available here, and the book is available here."

Time's Great Morning - Poetry

                                                                                                                        Love - 1895 - Klimt
 Time's Great Morning

Come to me today
fill your eyes with emerald green
carry with you our secret
of this forbidden lay
that we mask and disguise
to mold and solve on each wicked goodbye
watermark my body
with thy lips
embellish our destiny
with your gaze
secure our misfortunes
by looking away
melt your uncertainty
with my warm honey
take heed on this majestic discovery
a dream, our fate
that soars above the scattered tree's canopy
a belief, our story
that can be met
in the realm of Time's great morning
this is never ending
I will be thy lady for eternity

Traveling Show - A Love & Hate Relationship

~ A Traveling Show ~

An Era's Ambiance
Jewelry

I have this Love & Hate relationship with art festivals and shows.

I get really excited around the month of May...I find that all of my Winter stock that has been stashed away comes ALIVE!  I start planning on how I am going to change my booth around to better display the new collections.  I am always trying to find better ways to showcase and accentuate my style.
But that comes with a price...

I always forget how much work goes into a show.  I think it really hits home when you are standing outside in blistering HOT weather and sweat is pouring down your back.  All the while you are trying to look professional and inviting!

But even while your swatting the bugs, your booth and merchandise will say it all...

I'm here because I have a SOUL PASSION and a GIFT that I would like to share with others.

The long hours of creating, pricing, tagging, boxing and traveling pays off...

Because when that customer smiles and feels beautiful after she tries her necklace on...

~ My day is complete. ~
***
I find that genuine compliments will linger. I am still thinking of what the woman said who was quite taken back from Sunday's booth..."This makes me want to cry." I asked her in a concerned manner, "Oh no, it makes you want to cry?" She added, "....because everything is sooooo beautiful!"

Slowly but Surely ...I Want it All - How to Manage Time

Slowly but Surely...

I am going to master the art of balance.

I am going to figure out how to manage my time.

I can not ignore that the time I have to work on my art is very little.

I can not ignore that I am totally responsible on so many levels of who I am today.

To be honest...

I want it all.

 Sacrifice

I will not sacrifice anything in my life thus far.

I will not give up anything that has the slightest essence of my being.

No trials or tribulations can waver or knock me off balance!

I've got this!  I have come this far!  Everything that I have worked for...

I Am On a Quest - Travel Through Time

I Am On a Quest

I am on quest.
A personal excursion to find the better part of me.
A translation of what could have been or where I should be.

I am on a mission.
To conquer the lands that seem so far away.
To hear the words that will leave my lips on my dying day.

I am on a journey.
Where my arms become bridges to our lives.
Where I once stood will become a vacant sigh.

I am on a path.
That takes me across time to my past.
That travels to where my unspoken memories last.

Vulnerable - My Life. My Story. My Path.

                                                                                                  Photography By Sudden Flower

Let me dive into this.  Let me take your hand and walk you softly through my mind.

I am a woman who has chosen a path of two desires.

~ An Artist & A Family ~

This decision was chosen in 2006.

My heart desired to have both because I could not choose one with out the other.

I was determined to have a family while I pursued my art career.

Co-Exist * Balance * Harmonize

This comes with great patience and sacrifice for each moment is a lesson.

A decision on what is fair, what is responsible and what is important.

I can only allow my desires to melt into one and become whole with my creation.

My Life.  My Story  My Path.

The Dream - A Werewolf in My Dreams

The Dream
October 26, 2000
By Terah Ware

I remember walking through the crowd of people and having bright lights surrounding me.  The noises of the rides were clear and the laughing voices rang in my ears.  My eyes were scanning the area.  I could see an image of a man that I felt attracted to and almost intrigued by.  I was following him through the confusion, never talking to him.  Then all of a sudden a familiar man approached me.  He was distraught and seemed to yearn for my attention.  "Terah, I need to talk to you right away."  His intense face held mine and I felt panic run through my body.  What was wrong?  What happened?  The man before me I knew very well.  He was an old friend of mine that I trusted completely.  I felt this in my dream even though I never saw his face.  But the matter was urgent.  With fear I thought immediately that something happened to my brother.  That was how concerned I was and how sincere the man was.  He asked me to follow him and that he needed to tell me something very important.

                                                             Photography By Stephanie Spencer

My heart was waiting in anticipation.  I did notice that he had a friend with him and he followed too.  In my dream our bodies seemed to jump from one scene to the next.  Magically we were standing on the outskirts of the carnival.  I could see to my right the bright lights and the noises from the crowd were now distant.  There was a dark field to the left of us and a long wooden fence that gave me distance for my sight.  The man was about five yards away from me.  I was asking him with confusion what he needed to tell me.

My emotions were intense and I remember feeling sad.  The man frantically was telling me with his eyes that he was sorry.  The moon came to view and with the change of the clouds, he began to change.  Very suddenly the man before me was turning into a werewolf.  He was crying and with despair in his voice and in his eyes he said, "This is what I am.  Can't you see now?  This is why I can't be with you.  I love you, but I can't be with you now."  He came up to me very fast, standing in front of me with his disgust.  I remember his fangs and his pleading slit eyes.  He pushed me away, "Get away from me!  This is what I am!"  I was crying and through my tears, I watched him run away into the night.  I was in shock of what I had just seen.  In the confusion I gathered my emotions.  Mixed of sadness and surprisingly a moment of joy.  He had told me that he "loved me".

I turned to his friend, and he comforted me.  I did search for him afterwards, but never saw him again.  I could though feel his presence and I knew that he was watching me.
When I woke up that night from the dream, I could remember every detail of his face when he was a werewolf, but never of his human face.

Your Eyes - Stories of My Past

Your Eyes
By Terah Ware

Your eyes hold stories of my past.
They create ripples of emotions and water colored impressions that last.
Their intensity holds my attention
and I ponder on their depths;
only reliving memories that were merely sleeping.

Turns & Circles - For the Soul

                                                                                                                                                             Photography By Terah Ware

Turns & Circles

You were waiting for me to realize.
Turns & Circles are what I have.

Turns & Circles; that is what I do.

Look at what time has done for me.
A character that has sheer layers of pain and joy.
A soul that remembers.
Cries and wants to hide behind those great walls to help me gain control.
Designs a gate for a fortress so that someone can enter.
Wise man, give me the answer.

I beg you...

Let me just know.
That Turns & Circles get me no where for my Soul.

Once Again - A Poem For My Soul Mate

I have sat beside Kings.
Flocked with spirituals alike.
Turned my cheek to the cathedral's fortress.
Mocked the land beneath me.

I have kissed thy royal lips.
Climbed your castle's walls.
Bled a son.
Countless sons...

I have broken mirrors of reflections that are endless.
Gave wealth to the centuries.
Made piece with the moments.
Secluded my soul...
between your fading twilight.

I have rendered your aura with my candlelight.
Waxed thy precious memory in water.
Drifted to sleep in your coffin...
to find you here.

Once again.

The Figurehead - Breast Cancer Awareness - Mixed Media

"The Figurehead"
Terah Ware

Among the series of paintings in "Forever Strong Womanhood", their is "The Figurehead".  A painting that is more than what we view for pleasure, but an illustration that transcends a message of courage.

I remember sitting on my knees on the floor of my studio, practically on top of my painting that had slowly come to life over a period of three years.  The background had been completed and I knew that it was time for the next layer of information...

A woman who conveyed strength and yet displayed sorrow.

Images came rolling in my mind and the thought of my Great Grandmother appeared.  I knew that this piece would be different from the rest, a personal gesture that would linger for all women.

I imagined myself as my Great Grandmother, Lula Irene Koontz, during the end of her life.  She was succumbing to breast cancer in her home and was surrounded by family and friends.  I felt her courage during the illness and the sweet acceptance of passing.

How could I illustrate this?  How could I put these emotions for you to see?  How could I capture that strength?

My hands became swift and I began to render with pastel the beautiful face.  The downward look, the glance towards the compass.  A symbolic gesture that she is looking for direction.  Bare breasted and vulnerable, she has been exposed...maybe revealed.  The painting is not complete without the opened pocket watch.  My mind reeled with imagery and symbolism.  I wanted the viewer to feel the pain.  I wanted to create an image that showed the breast removed.  I wanted people to see that breast cancer is not just a disease.

One of the most profound interpretations that was presented to me gave me goose bumps.

As she had tears in her eyes, she said, "Time is running out."  ~ Dr. Cee Ann Davis

As an artist, I believe that I succeed with a work of art if...only if...it makes you feel something.  If you remember something or that it touches your heart.
